The Manawa Cowboys are back

The Manawa Cowboys had their first games of the season Aug. 21 at Lindsay Park.

Manawa Red 6

Amherst Blue 25

The Manawa Cowboy’s Red team overcame their fear of the Amherst Blue team. Even though #28 Zachary Teuscher scored their only touchdown, Manawa did not give up. The game ended with Manawa Red 6 and Amherst Blue 25.

“There’s room for improvement,” stated coaches Troy Zielke and Troy Wiesner. “It was a definite learning experience, and we didn’t know what to expect.”

Manawa White 6

Amherst White 8

The Manawa Cowboy’s White team started out the game with a touchdown from #1 Chase Timm and the field goal was no good. Amherst White came back into the game with a touchdown and the field goal was good. There was no scoring after the first quarter.

“We made a few mistakes,” commented coach Mike Koehn. “The team sort of fell apart after Amherst fell apart. But, hey, it was our first game and I think, mentally compared to Amherst, we won.”

Manawa Black 21

Amherst 20

The final game of the evening was Manawa Black against Amherst. The first quarter started out with Manawa’s #22 Zachary Kreklow scoring a touchdown and the field goal was good. Amherst came back with a touchdown and their field goal tied the game at 8-8.

The second quarter started out with another touchdown from the Cowboys’ #12 Billy Murphy, but the field goal was no good. Amherst just wasn’t giving up and they scored a touchdown, but their field goal also was no good. The game was tied at 14-14. Now both teams were ready to score a touchdown before half time, so Amherst hit the Cowboys with another touchdown. Again the field goal was no good. Amherst led 20-14.

After half time, both teams came back on the field to kick some butt, but that didn’t happen until Manawa ended the game with a touchdown from #22 Zachary Kreklow. The one-point conversion was good, ending the game Manawa 21 and Amherst 20.

The coaches gave the after game pep talk. As the team listened with one knee down, Caden Lick started singing the song, “We are the Cowboys” and the team joined him.

“They did well,” stated coach Kurt Kreklow. “We shot a couple big plays, but they stopped Amherst and they won the game.”

The cheerleaders did a fantastic job for cheering on the Cowboys and keeping the crowd entertained.

The Cowboys Red team will be at Winneconne at 10 a.m. Aug. 28 and Manawa Black plays at 11:30 a.m. The Manawa Cowboys White team plays at Berlin at 10:30 a.m.
