Dorothy J. Smith, age 81, previously of Stevens Point and Janesville, WI went to her home in heaven September 7, 2010 after a 3 year battle with ovarian cancer. A celebration of her life was held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Boston Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas E. Petersen officiating. Friends may visited with the family from 12 noon until time of service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers her family requests donations be made to local food pantries in her name. Dorothy was born in Waupaca, WI on December 3, 1928 to the late Leroy and Lillian (Nohr) Funk. She married Timothy H. Smith on May 25, 1946. Jesus Christ was the rock on which she rebuilt her life after her divorce in 1976. Dorothy moved to Stevens Point and worked 20 years at Herrschner’s, retiring as a batch balancer in 1996. In earlier years she operated a rug weaving business in the 1960’s and 70’s, and ran a Christmas Wreath business for over 30 years. She maintained many lifelong friendships from work and created more in retirement on her bingo bus forays. Her love of theatre, music and travel took her to much of the United States on bus trips. She was previously a member of Barbara Rebekah Lodge #9. Her devout Christian faith inspired her to support local food pantries and St. Paul’s Lutheran School. She is survived by her children, Mary Kimmel, Stevens Point, WI; Jonathan Doppsmith, Omro, WI; Marsha G. Haynes, Amherst, WI; Marjorie (Leon) DeJongh, Janesville, WI; Michael (Jolene) Smith, Waupaca, WI; Robert Smith, Stevens Point, WI. She is further survived by 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. Other survivors include her sister, Velora “Lory” Volkenant, Chattanooga, TN; and her best friend, Clara Molski, Stevens Point, WI. Dorothy was preceded in death by her sisters, Edith Guderjohn and Charlotte Funk, and her brothers, Edwin and Alfred Funk. Her battle against cancer was inspired by her nephew, Jim Guderjohn, who also preceded her in death.
