Manawa Cowboys round up Berlin and Iola

The Manawa Cowboys red, white and black teams were supposed to play at Lindsay Park Sept. 25, but due to the rain and recent flooding the games were moved to Iola.

In the 4 p.m. game, the Manawa Cowboys Red team defeated Berlin 27-16. Zachery Teuscher #28 made two touchdowns. Ryan Schuelke #10 and McCormack Flores #5 made one touchdown each. “We keep building and moving forward and also making good improvement,” stated coach Troy Weisner.

In the 5:30 p.m. game, the Cowboys White team defeated the previously undefeated Iola Firebirds Black team 6-0. Iola started the game with the punt to Dylan Moeller #17, who ran the ball into the end zone; but with a flag on the play the touchdown was no good. Manawa fumbled the ball but also recovered it. With 4:22 on the clock in the first quarter Chase Timm #1 ran the ball for a touchdown. Once again Manawa fumbled and the ball was recovered by Brayden Witterholt #22. Near the end of the first quarter, a pass was intercepted by Iola.

In the third quarter Bryce Schulke #75 almost got to the quarterback before the ball was thrown. When Iola fumbled, the Cowboys’ Jackson Jaeger #86 almost recovered the ball, but Iola got there first.

In the fourth quarter, Schulke recovered a fumble. Nate Newton #13 helped Hunter Westphal #20 make first down yardage trying to keep Iola off his back. Wyatt Nichols #18 was injured during the game and the crowd cheered as he was able to walk off the field.

“It was a hard fought game with a lot of penalties,” stated head coach Mike Koehn. “Penalties were a big problem, but they did a good job.”

The final game was Cowboys Black versus undefeated Iola Firebirds at 7 p.m. Noah Bartel #11 intercepted a pass. to bring Manawa to their 1st down. #22 at With 5:29 left in the first quarter, Zack Kreklow ran for a 50-yard touchdown. Extra point attempt by Caden Lick #15 was no good. Jordan Kons #99 and helped Ethan Hass #8 run for a first down. Montana Ernst #5 helped

Hass get one yard away from a first down. In the second quarter with 7:02 on the clock, Hass ran in for a touchdown. The field goal by Lick was no good. A pass was intercepted and an Iola player started running for touchdown and was finally plowed down by Zack Kreklow #22. A flag on the play brought the ball back. Once again Iola intercepted the ball and Kreklow again stopped a touchdown. Cameron Oltz #63 also stopped another touchdown attempt. With 2:15 left in the quarter, Iola made their only touchdown; field goal was good. Manawa fumbled and Iola jumped on the ball to end the first half.

The second half started with Hass punting the ball. Gavin Lorge #45 moved everyone out of the way to allow Hass to carry the ball for a first down. In the fourth quarter Manawa fumbled the ball but quickly recovered. With 1:25 left in the game everyone was on the edge of their seats as Manawa led 12-8. Iola was getting closer to the end zone then Caden Lick #15 intercepted the ball. The crowd screamed and cheered as Lick ran in for a touchdown; Lick also got the field goal. Iola had the ball once again with time for them to make a touchdown, but Hass ended the game with an interception. Manawa won 20-8

Even head coach Kurt Kreklow was singing in the huddle as the team sang: “we are the Cowboys … rough and tough, you just watch us do our stuff, Cowboys!”

Tremendous job,” Kreklow stated. “They were really smelling the victory. They did a really good job.”

Next week the Cowboys travel to Berlin. White plays at 11:30 a.m., Red at 1 p.m. and Black at 2:30 p.m.
