The Weyauwega Police Department will continue to have four full-time police officers and a part-time chief next year.
The Weyauwega Common Council approved such a plan when it met Monday, Sept. 20.
The city will continue to contract with RW Management to have Ed Janke as its part-time police chief. During the next year, Janke is to mentor the staff and complete a strategic plan for the department.
The city’s Police Task Force Committee recommended last month that the department maintain its four full-time officers and contract with Janke.
Its recommendation also included having Janke groom someone from within the department to then become the full-time chief. However, the vote by the common council did not include that as part of its motion.
City Administrator Sheryl Scheuermann said the council did not want to be locked into anything and plans to make a decision next year.
Janke was appointed interim police chief last fall after Curt Field resigned in September 2009 as chief.
Also considered by the task force committee was a proposal from Waupaca County Sheriff Brad Hardel for the city to contract with the sheriff’s department for police services.
