Bulldogs to host conference cross country meet

The Bulldogs’ cross country season has proven to be filled with personal records, rewarding finishes and plenty of team dinners.

Teammates of all ages are bonding and seniors are even battling freshmen for their spots. After this Thursday’s conference meet hosted by New London, however, only half of the current roster will be left preparing for sectionals.

To ensure fresh legs for conference and sectionals, high intensity workouts are now out for the rest of the season.

“The training regimen for the cross country team enters the tapering phase, where the workout load is less, the muscles are rested, and the athletes are itching to just run,” coach Ron DuVernay said. Athletes should expect more aerobic runs, likely through the countryside where trees are currently displaying their vivid autumn colors.

To celebrate the upcoming home meet, New London’s athletic department tried something new. Instead of bringing teams back to the same course they ran in Hatten Park last month, athletic director Scott Eggart reserved Shamrock Heights Golf Course for the occasion.

“It is a blessing, as Shamrock Heights captures all the elements a course should include: hills, straight-aways, and aesthetic natural beauty,” DuVernay said. “Hatten Park is our home invitational site, and that will not change in the future because teams like to come and run on the trails.”

Shamrock Heights has never hosted a cross country meet, so a major part of preparation was creating a running course.

“Designing a cross country course is a bit of a challenge,” DuVernay said. “Honestly, I tried to avoid loops, wanted to include inclines, long straight portions, and have it finish with the athletes running up a hill. After the initial plan, Assistant Coach Nick Schaefer (a 2006 graduate from New London High School) and I wheeled off the course to ensure the proper distance.”

The Bulldogs would appreciate spectators checking out the new course and cheering them on. The Bay Conference cross country meet takes place at Shamrock Heights Golf Course, located at N5525 Old Hwy 45, New London. The gun for the first race goes off at 4PM.
