Fall prevention class offered

A new workshop aimed at helping people 60 and over with fall prevention is available at St. Joseph Residence chapel from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Thursdays through November.

Stepping On is offered by BrightStar in conjunction with the Aging and Disability Resource Center and Network Health Insurance. The workshop spans seven weeks.

Stepping On will show participants different ways to prevent falls, such as providing strength and balance exercises, home safety check suggestions, and a display of fall prevention products. The workshop is not just for people who have fallen, but also for people who fear falling.

Through the different exercises and through the group sharing their own fall experiences, the group will leave with more strength, better balance, and a feeling of independence.

Trained facilitators and volunteer local guest speakers include BrightStar, Orthopedic & Spine Therapy, Advanced Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine, MJ Care Therapy, Rehab Alliance, Morton Pharmacy, New Balance Fox Valley, Office for the Blind and Visually Impaired, The Doc at Your Door and representatives from area police departments.

The program was developed by Dr. Lindy Clemson of Sydney, Australia, to help people 60 and over learn ways to prevent falls. Clemson’s research has found that people who complete the workshop have a 31 percent reduced rate of falls.

Workshops are also offered at facilities throughout the Fox Valley. For more information, contact Sharon at BrightStar, 920-882-7277, [email protected].
