Bulldog girls just short of conference title

The Bulldog girls did not capture the conference title they sought, but they showcased their speed.

The girls took second to champions Luxemburg-Casco at the home Bay Conference cross country meet at Shamrock Heights Golf Course last Thursday.

“We knew it was going to be close,” coach Ron DuVernay said. “It was close – we took second. We have to be proud of that.”

The girls trailed behind Luxemburg Casco by only nine points. The boys’ team finished sixth in the conference, with Shawano taking the boys’ title.

Runners enjoy new course

Returning competitors finally had the opportunity to explore unfamiliar territory for the first time this season. Coach Ron DuVernay, assistant coach Nick Schaefer and senior Michael Heise collaborated to bring their proposed course layout to reality. The big loop around the golf course kept spectators moving as much as the athletes, but the lack of repeated terrain served the runners well.

“(One loop) kept things interesting because there was new scenery with every step,” senior Andrew Schlais said. “I loved the random hills.”

Senior Dan Bessette completely agreed. “I actually like running hills, so this course was good for me.”

The magnificent sight of the rich greens sprawled with autumn foliage helped senior Alex Elliott pull through. A mix-up prevented him from receiving a timing device for his ankle, so he could not score for the JV boys nor record a time. He had no choice but to treat his final high school cross country race as a ‘fun run.’ For him and those not competing at sectionals next week, a mid-autumn race at a hometown course, supported by family and friends, is a memorable way to end the season.

Conference honors

First-team all conference recognition went to Annalise Schroeder, third place; Macy Egan, fifth; and Michael Heise, fifth. All-conference honors were awarded to Brenna Heise, 15th; Andrew Philippon, 19th; Bridget Pethke, 21st, Ian Wetzel, 21st; and Kara Hoier, 24th.

The Varsity Bulldogs run sectionals this Friday at Nine Mile County Forest in Wausau beginning at 4 PM. New London High School hopes that several of their individuals will progress to the Division 1 State Meet on October 30 in Wisconsin Rapids. The top two teams and top five individuals outside the top two teams qualify for the 2010 State meet.
