Lady Wolves end their season

The Lady Wolves traveled to Kewaunee for the first round of Regional play.

Though the match ended in three sets, the teams were very evenly matched and either team could have been victorious. Unfortunately, the Kewaunee Storm came out on top, allowing them to continue on in Regionals and finishing the Wolves’ season.

In the first set, the teams started by playing back-and-forth, allowing neither team to control the game. Though the Storm was ahead by two points early in the game, Manawa was able to regain the lead with two ace serves by Krista Braun. On their side out the Storm put four points on the board, once again leading 13-10. An ace serve by Ali Dean brought the game to within one. That was the last time the Wolves would be that close. The side out point put the game at 14-12 in Kewaunee’s favor. The Wolves really struggled to receive the balls sent over by the Storm’s next player. She put together an eight-point run, which included four aces. Though Manawa fought to stay in the set, they were unable to make up such a point spread and the set ended 25-18.

Set number two started with the same Kewaunee server taking advantage of the Wolves. She had her team leading 8-2 before Manawa’s Makayla Johnson was able to put together a five-point run. After catching up from such an early deficit, the Lady Wolves were able to stay in the game until the score was 18-14. At this point, Kewaunee earned four points, giving them an eight-point lead and a 25-15 win.

Though the Wolves started the third set with a four-point run, Kewaunee dominated the final set with three big runs of four points or more. While Manawa played some really scrappy defense, digging up some tough hits and well placed tips and keeping the ball alive in some spectacular plays, they were unable to put much offense together. This allowed the Storm to finish the match 25-19.

Aimee Drath played very well for the Wolves. She led her team with 12 points, 11 of which were spike/tip kills. She really read the floor well, knowing when to swing hard and when to tip. This was evident by her .611 hitting percentage for the night. Kayla Johnson had the second most kills, with five. She has really grown as a right side hitter over the last year and should be proud of how far she has come. Braun led her team with 13 assists and had eight points for the night, four aces and four kills. Other point contributors included: Dean with 3, M. Johnson and Kali Draeger each with 2, and MaryKay Heinz with 1. Ashley Remington was the leading server for the Wolves, serving 9-of-9 from the service line. Megan O’Brien (5-of-5) and Danielle Ferg (2-of-2) were both 100 percent for the evening also.
