Varsity Polar Bears earn playoff spot

The varsity Polar Bear football team defeated Marinette 34-20 Thursday night Oct. 21 in the final game of the regular season.

Hortonville put 13 points on the board in the first quarter, first on a 10 yard pass play from Kegan Gennrich to Zach Vallafskey, and then on a three yard run from Eric Spranger.

In the second quarter Joe Sommers caught an eight yard pass from Gennrich and the score was 20-0 going into halftime.

In the third quarter Marinette connected on a 26-yard pass play to get their first point on the board. Hortonville’s Vallafskey struck back with a 12-yard run for his second touchdown of the game. Later on in the fourth quarter he iced the cake with a 52-yard punt return. Two fourth quarter touchdowns by the Marines could save the ship.

Hortonville finishes the regular season with a 6-3 record and a spot in the playoffs. The Polar Bears travel to Tomah in the Division 2 first round regional game at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Due to press time the results of that game will be printed in next week’s edition.

Good luck Polar Bears!
