Cold shooting hurts I-S girls in opener

The Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team held Wild Rose to only 39 points Friday, Dec. 3, in the season opener.

However, the Wildcats held the Thunderbirds to only 19 points.

The T-Birds took a 4-3 lead into the second quarter, but Wild Rose had an 11-2 advantage over the next eight minutes to take a 14-6 halftime lead.

The Wildcats also outscored the T-Birds 12-8 in the third quarter and 13-5 in the fourth.

Samantha Griffin led the T-Birds with six points, while Lidia Frias chipped in with four.

Danielle Munter led Wild Rose with 11 points, while Haley Hazlett and Morgan Yeska added 10 each.

Karina Welch had a team-high six rebounds for I-S, while Frias, Morgan Oppor and Mary Marx added five apiece. Griffin had three steals, while Marx added a pair of assists.

The T-Birds hit only six of 42 shots on the night, but outrebounded the Wildcats 29-25.

I-S opened Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play Tuesday, Dec. 7, at Amherst. The T-birds will host Manawa Friday, Dec. 10. The junior varsity game is set for 6 p.m., while tipoff for the varsity game will follow at 7:30 p.m.
