T-Birds knock off Royals

The Iola-Scandinavia boys’ basketball team entered Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play this week after splitting a pair of nonconference games with Wisconsin Rapids Assumption and Wild Rose.

I-S handed Assumption a 40-35 defeat on the Royals’ home court Saturday, Dec. 4, after opening the season Tuesday, Nov. 30, with a 61-49 loss to Wild Rose.

In Wisconsin Rapits, Jordan Beyersdorf and Bradly Hardel led the Thunderbirds with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Lucas Albers had a team-high 17 rebounds to go along with his seven points.

Wild Rose 61, I-S 49

Albers led the T-Birds at home with 16 points, but I-S didn’t have an answer for Brian Thompson, who led the Wildcats with 24.

The T-Birds outscored Wild Rose 10-9 in the first quarter, but the Wildcats led 22-21 at halftime. The Wildcats began to pull away with an 18-13 advantage in the third quarter and sealed the win with a 21-15 advantage over the final eight minutes.

Hardel and Beyersdorf also finished in double figures for the T-Birds with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Jake Thompson scored 14 points for Wild Rose, while Kelton Dopp added 10.

The T-Birds hosted Amherst Tuesday, Dec. 9, in the CWC opener and will play at Manawa Friday, Dec. 10. I-S will also host Auburndale in nonconference action Tuesday, Dec. 14.
