Thunderbirds drop two games

The Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team dropped recent Central Wisconsin 8 Conference games to Manawa and Amherst.

Manawa defeated the Thunderbirds 28-21 Friday, Jan. 28, while Amherst picked up a 52-27 win Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Manawa 28, I-S 21

A late rally came up a few points short, as the T-Birds trailed by 13 points with two minutes remaining.

I-S led 6-4 after one quarter and the teams went into the locker room tied at 9-9 at halftime. Manawa began to pull away in the third quarter with a 10-4 advantage and the Wolves also outscored the T-Birds 9-8 in the fourth.

Neither team had a scorer reach double figures. Elle Maus led the T-Birds with eight points, while Krista Braun led the Wolves with seven. Lidia Frias added seven points, six rebounds and a pair of steals for I-S, while teammate Morgan Oppor pulled down five rebounds.

Amherst 52, I-S 27

Amherst held the T-Birds scoreless in the first quarter and outscored them 24-9 in the second.

The Falcons held a slim 12-11 advantage in the third quarter before outscoring the home team 12-7 over the final eight minutes.

Frias led the T-Birds with six points and nine rebounds. Karina Welch chipped in with five points and four rebounds, while Mary Marx added five assists and five rebounds.

Jaimee Pitt and Shelby Serafin led Amherst with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The T-Birds played in Rosholt Tuesday, Feb. 1, and will host Weyauwega-Fremont at 7:30 tonight (Thursday, Feb. 3). The team will also head to Bonduel Thursday, Feb. 10, before hosting Wisconsin Valley Lutheran Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Iola-Scandinavia Community Fitness & Aquatic Center. The junior varsity game is set for 1 p.m., with the varsity contest to follow.
