Shiocton tops I-S in final seconds

Shiocton overcame a five-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter and handed the Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team a 34-33 Central Wisconsin 8 Conference loss Thursday, March 3, in the regular-season finale for both squads.

I-S outscored the Chiefs 14-4 in the first quarter, but the visitors cut the deficit to 21-14 at halftime and 27-22 after three quarters.

Nicole Ritchie scored the game-winning basket with five seconds remaining after Paige Berg had given the Thunderbirds a one-point lead with 25 seconds to go.

Morgan Oppor and Berg led the T-Birds with 10 and eight points, respectively, and shared the team rebounding lead with nine. Karina Welch added six rebounds and three steals, while Mary Marx finished with four assists.

Both teams opened state tournament play Tuesday, March 8. I-S, a No. 6 seed, played No. 3 Menominee Indian in Keshena. If the T-Birds defeated the Eagles, they will play at No. 2 Bonduel at 7 p.m. Friday, March 11, in a Division 4 regional semifinal.
