Stoltenberg, Myrtle

Myrtle B. Stoltenberg, age 96, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Riverside Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born on February 12, 1915 to the late George and Martha (Brecklin) Hoff near Medford, WI. She spent her childhood in Curtiss, WI and graduated from Abbotsford High School in 1932. Myrtle attended Stevens Point Teacher’s College and graduated with a degree in elementary education. Her years after college were spent dedicated to teaching in Scandinavia, Owen, Trinity Lutheran Parochial School in Minneapolis, MN and Nelsonville, WI. It was in Nelsonville where she met her husband, Howard Stoltenberg. Myrtle and Howard were married on August 2, 1947 in Curtiss, WI. Their marriage later took them to residences in Coddington, Nelsonville, Wittenberg, Sunset Lake (Amherst Jct.), and Waupaca. While in Wittenberg, Myrtle taught elementary grades at Elderon Grade School for 23 years. She retired in 1978. Myrtle was an avid reader of the Bible and faithful Christian. As a devoted wife, she and Howard spent much of retirement at Sunset Lake in Amherst Jct. and traveled to Arizona for sixteen winters. Proud of her family, Myrtle would always have pictures on display of her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were all the most important aspects of her life, especially after Howard’s death in 2003. Myrtle is survived by: Sons: Thomas (Chris) Stoltenberg of Green Bay, WI, James (Linda) Stoltenberg of Waupaca, WI; Grandchildren: Scott (Laura) Stoltenberg of Pewaukee, WI, Kim (Roger) Hunwardsen of Eden Prairie, MN, Teri (Mike) Joyner of Rochester, MN, Mikal Stoltenberg of Milwaukee, WI, Kristin (Bruce) Doscher of Auckland, New Zealand. Great-Grandchildren: Ryan, Sean, & Trent Hunwardsen, Gavin Johnson, Tanner & Emery Stoltenberg, and Kai Joyner; Sister: Dorothy McCorison of Eau Claire, WI; Sister-in-law: Marian Hoff of Belmont, CA. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Martha Hoff; her husband, Howard Stoltenberg; a sister, Ethel Boardman; a brother, Harley Hoff; three sisters-in-law, Alice Wrolstad, Amy Stoltenberg, and Helen Stoltenberg; and four brothers-in-law, Louie Boardman Jack McCorison, Russell Wrolstad, and Reverend Jerome Stoltenberg. A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 11:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waupaca, WI. Pastor Jennifer DeNetz officiated. A visitation was held from 9:30 – 11:30 AM at the church on Saturday. Burial was at Nelsonville Lutheran Cemetery in the Town of New Hope on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to Trinity Lutheran Church, 206 E. Badger Street, Waupaca, WI 54981. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements.

The family would like to thank the pastors from Nelsonville Lutheran Church and Trinity Lutheran Church for their care through the years and to the superior care given at Park Vista Retirement Community who treated Myrtle like one of their own family members. Also, we would like to thank Dr. Robert Dent who cared for mom through the many medical challenges in her final years and to the paramedics, doctors, and nurses at Riverside Medical Center for their prompt, professional, and comforting response this past weekend and on preceding visits.
