NLHS Art Team wins State Title

New London High School Art Team are State Champions once again. They repeated this title from last year at the Wisconsin Art Education Association’s “Visual Arts Classic” competition Friday April 8. The VAC is a multi faceted completion, involving both individual student projects and team competitions based on an overall theme.

This years theme was “Art and Myth.” Students were required to complete two individual artworks, a Long-Term and an On-Site piece of work. In mid-October students received the Long-Term prompts, which they work on completing for a regional competition in March. This artwork is taken to the competition and judged.

While the Long-Term project is being judged, the students are given two and a half hours to complete a second On-Site artwork at the competition. After the On-Site student gets about 15minutes to have lunch, they are moved quickly into the first of two team competitions called Critical Thinking.

Critical Thinking is just that, students are given a prompt/problem and come up with a solution. This year at the state competition, students were given a current social issue that they needed to solve while incorporating a cultural myth. In only 40 minutes the team must work together to not only solve the social issue, but create a visual solution, using a 12 x 4-foot piece of paper and a two to three minute long presentation explaining the solution.

From Critical Thinking students get the opportunity to partake in critiques of their artwork with either a professional artist or college professor. Finally, the team competes in a 30 question Quiz Bowl competition based on a list of a given artist.

The overall team trophies are based on the combined scores of all the Long-term, On-site, Critical Thinking and Quiz Bowl. Teams may also receive trophies in Critical Thinking and Quiz Bowl. On their way to winning a second State Championship, the NLHS team placed third in Quiz Bowl and second in Critical Thinking.

Individual first place award winners were as follows: Alyssa Lenz – Digital Photography (LT&OS); Jessica Bell – Digital Photography (LT&OS); Anna Moser – Personal Adornment (LT&OS); Walker Mence – Graphic Design (OS); Marissa Meagher – Printmaking (LT).
