Thunderbirds s posts 2-2 record on the road

The Iola-Scandinavia softball team won two and lost two road games this past week.

The Thunderbirds won their conference opener 5-0 over Wittenberg-Birnamwood Monday, April 11; handed Waupaca an 8-1 defeat Tuesday, April 12; and dropped a pair of conference games to Stevens Point Pacelli, 10-0, Thursday, April 14; and to Bonduel, 7-6, Friday, April 15.

The T-Birds have a 1-2 record in the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference and are 3-2 overall.

I-S 5, W-B 0

WITTENBERG – Senior pitcher Morgan Oppor threw a no-hitter to help Iola-Scandinavia defeat the Chargers.

She walked one batter while striking out eight.

Whitney Tomczak led the T-Birds offensively with four hits, including a double, while driving in two runs. Elle Maus and Mary Marx each had two hits while Maus had two RBIs. Marx had a double and a RBI.

The T-Birds took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Oppor singled and scored on a single by Marx. Marx scored on Maus’ groundout.

The T-Birds added two more runs in the third. After Marx reached on an error, she scored on a single by Maus. Maus later scored on a single by Tomczak for a 4-0 lead.

I-S scored its final run in the fifth, as Marx doubled and scored on Tomczak’s single.

I-S 8, Waupaca 1

WAUPACA – The T-Birds scored four runs in the fourth and fifth innings in the nonconference win over the Comets.

I-S had eight hits and benefitted from six walks.

Oppor went the distance to earn the win, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out nine batters.

Oppor and Kiara Boutwell had two hits each, with Oppor driving in two runs on each of her singles. Marx had a two-run single in the fourth and Tomczak doubled in the fifth.

Natasha Smith took the loss for the Comets.

Pacelli 10, I-S 0

STEVENS POINT – Pacelli proved to be a conference title contender and humbled Iola-Scandinavia with an easy 10-0 win over the T-Birds.

The game was stopped after the sixth inning due to the 10-run rule.

The Cardinals had nine hits, including an over-the-fence home run to left field into a strong wind by Dani Hoover off of Oppor. She received little help from her team’s defense, as the T-Birds committed five errors.

Payton Erickson had the lone hit for I-S, a single in the third. She also pitched the final inning, allowing two hits and no walks and had no strikeouts.

Bonduel 7, I-S 6

BONDUEL – I-S rallied from a 6-1 deficit to tie the game in the sixth inning, only to give up the go-ahead run to the Bears in the bottom of the sixth.

The T-Birds had plenty of opportunities, but couldn’t deliver the big hit as the team left 10 runners on base.

Oppor went the distance in taking the loss. She gave up nine hits and three walks and struck out nine batters.

I-S outhit Bonduel 11-9. Maus and Oppor each had three hits, including a triple. Maus’ bases-loaded triple came in the five-run sixth inning. She was thrown out at home on a close play, as she tried to stretch her hit to a home run. Maus also had a double and drove in three runs. Erickson and Boutwell each had two hits. Erickson had a double and drove in two runs.

The T-Bird junior varsity team won one and lost two at home. The T-Birds beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood 7-6 April 11 and lost two games to Waupaca, 5-3, April 12 and Pacelli, 9-4, April 14. The JV team has a 1-2 record.

I-S 7, W-B 6,

IOLA – Denisha Erno drove in the winning run the seventh after she doubled to score Sophie Erdman. Karina Welch went the distance to pick up the win. Welch walked three while striking out 10 batters.

Waupaca 5, I-S 3

WAUPACA – I-S scored three runs on no hits in a 5-3 loss. Welch went the distance. She walked one while striking out four batters.

Pacelli 9, I-S 4

IOLA – Danielle Schmidt had two hits, including a triple, while driving three runs. Welch went the distance in taking the loss, walking four and striking out seven batters.

The varsity team will play at Amherst today (Thursday, April 21) before hosting Shiocton on Tuesday, April 26.

Both games will start at 4:30 p.m.
