T-Bird girls held hitless, but still win

Iola-Scandinavia didn’t get a hit, but still handed Manawa a 2-1 loss Monday, April 18, in a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference softball matchup.

Varsity and junior varsity games scheduled against Amherst on Thursday, April 21, were postponed due to weather. The varsity team has a 2-2 conference record and is 4-2 overall.

All three of the game’s runs came in the first inning. Katelyn Langman reached on an infield hit for Manawa, stole second and scored on Ansley Block’s hit to right field.

Morgan Oppor started Iola-Scandinavia’s two-run rally in the bottom of the first. She walked, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball. Payton Erickson drew a walk, stole second and scored on an error on a ball hit by Whitney Tomczak.

Oppor went the distance in picking up the win. She allowed only three hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out eight. Manawa’s Krista Braun also went the distance in taking the tough luck loss. She walked eight batters and finished with five strikeouts.

The T-Birds left two runners on base in the second inning, while Manawa stranded a pair in the fourth. “Good pitching and solid defense prevented either team from scoring,” I-S coach Tom Anderson said.

The T-Birds will play at Weyauwega-Fremont today (Thursday, April 28) before hosting Bonduel Friday, April 29, with both games starting at 4:30 p.m. I-S will play Tigerton and Wausaukee at Wausaukee Saturday, April 30. The T-Birds will play Tigerton, the defending Division 4 state champions, at 11:30 a.m., followed by the Wausaukee game at 1 p.m. Iola-Scandinavia will host Weyauwega-Fremont at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 2.

The T-Bird JV team will play a pair of doubleheader games, as Weyauwega-Fremont will come to Iola today, with the first game set to start at 4:30 p.m. The T-Birds will also play at Amherst at 4 p.m. April 29. The T-Birds will also host Rosholt at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3.
