Comets get second shot at Hawks

Appleton Xavier handed the Waupaca Comet girls’ soccer team a 1-0 defeat earlier this season.

The Comets will get a second crack at the Hawks today (Thursday, June 9), as both teams are still alive in the state tournament and will meet at 7 p.m. at Xavier for a WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal.

Waupaca won a regional championship Saturday, June 4, with a 4-1 over Northland Pines and opened tournament play Thursday, June 2, with a 7-0 win over Wautoma.

Waupaca 4, Northland Pines 1

APPLETON – Lizzie Hanke scored all four of the Comets’ goals off of three assists from Kirsten Fehrman and one from Karissa Smith.

Hanke opened the scoring 38 minutes into the game after Fehrman served a ball into tight space behind the Northland Pines defense. Hanke beat the last defender to the ball and ripped a shot off the crossbar.

Sammy Pusateri tied the game with an unassisted goal 11 minutes into the second half, but Hanke and Fehrman teamed up four minutes later. Fehrman won a 50-50 ball on the wing and played the ball into the penalty area. Hanke won the ball on a strong move to the goal and came up with the gamewinner.

Hanke struck again a minute later, with Smith getting credit for the assist. Hanke and Fehrman teamed up one last time with eight minutes remaining in the game.

“Lizzie Hanke had a break out day with Kirsten Fehrman fueling the fire,” coach Mark Polebitski said. “We felt the importance of the regional final game and showed up to play 80 minutes of tough soccer. We played solid from front to back and I was moved by their determination and character as a team.”
