B.A.B.E.S. doing well, has short wish list

B.A.B.E.S. Director Polly Fitzgerald reports that the short term, no cost respite facility set up to care for children is doing well these days. Volunteerism is up. A woman even drives from Little Chute to mow the lawn.

“We are fortunate with our volunteers, and I’m always happy to accept more who want to help,” says Fitzgerald. She commented that several college students have returned to help this summer.

In the summer, hours at B.A.B.E.S. increase, and they are open Monday -Thursday 12 – 8 p.m.

“We have more school aged children here with their younger siblings,” explains Fitzgerald.

“What we could really use are fresh fruits and vegetables to feed the children. Many of them don’t get these options at home, and if we could provide them that valuable nutrition during the summer months when people have excess in their gardens, it’s a win/win situation for everyone,” said Fitzgerald with a knowing grin.

Strawberries are now in season, and would be appreciated. Other items that become available like cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, peas and beans would all be a welcomed surprise.

Other items on their wish list include healthy snacks, juice, dry erase markers, garbage bags, boxed and dry foods, zip lock bags and Cheerios.

The respite center is located behind Pomp’s Tires off Shawano Street on Northridge Drive. Items can be dropped off during their hours of operation. Call 982-9995 with questions.

Success has been seen with the program this year. “Several moms have been bringing their youngsters here while they look for employment and have job interviews. Three mothers recently secured jobs and have moved on,” explained Fitzgerald.

Those families who are registered with B.A.B.E.S. also receive personal hygiene items.
