Former Marion teacher charged with sex offense

Edward N. Marquardt, 59, Marion, was charged with two counts of repeated sexual assault of a child and two counts of indecent exposure.

Marquardt faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted of sexual assault of a child.

On July 20, Detective Sgt. John Mocadlo with the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department interviewed a 14-year-old boy who said he had been helping Marquardt on his farm in the town of Dupont for about three years. He said Marquardt had also been tutoring him and his 12-year-old brother.

According to the criminal complaint, the boy and his younger brother said Marquardt had touched them inappropriately when each of them were sitting next to him during the tutoring lessons. The 14-year-old boy said Marquardt had been touching him at least once or twice a week for about a year. During most of the incidents, both Marquardt and the boys were clothed. However, on at least two occasions Marquardt allegedly exposed himself.

Marquardt reportedly told Mocadlo that he was a “sexaholic” and had been hospitalized for treatment of his condition but he could not control himself.

Marquardt retired from teaching at Marion High School in the spring of 2006, where he had been a coach for the chess team.
