Schiesser travels to Washington, D.C.

As political battles continue to wage their wars, a New London FFA member had the opportunity of a lifetime to be one over 500 different FFA members from across our country to visit our nations capitol. The Washington Leadership Conference (WLC) is sponsored each year by the National FFA.

Gabby Schiesser will be completing her senior year at New London High School and serves as this year’s president.

During the five-day event, July 12-17, attendees learned how to become effective leaders by teaching them to know their purpose, value people, take action and serve others. The theme of the conference was “It Takes One To Start a Ripple”.

They leave with the knowledge and the confidence to act in ways that help their schools, community, and their country.

Gabby noted that it was “definitely worth the experience and that if anyone gets the opportunity, take it!” She had the chance to see the National Mall, both the Lincoln and Washington Memorials, and even a tribute to all our soldiers during WWII and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Gabby mentioned that the Metro transportation line was unique, with its stops at the Smithsonian and more.

Gabby took being an advocate into action by stopping at Herb Kohl’s office to hear the latest on agriculture policy. Another unique service project was all participants packaged enough food for 30,000 Dominican Republic orphans: rice, veggies, soy and vitamins.

Gabby’s roommates were from the states of Nebraska, Ohio and Kentucky. She noted that the experience was so amazing, you don’t want to leave”. Thanks are in order to the New London FFA Alnmni. They were awarded a scholarship at the spring Section 8 banquet and paid the balance of $870 for Gabby to have this once in a lifetime experience.
