Suspect in New London death arrested

The death of a woman in New London has led to an arrest and criminal investigation.

Shortly before 2:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, New London police received a call regarding a domestic disturbance at America’s Best Value Inn, 1409 N. Shawano St. When they arrived, they found Amelia A. Schmitz, 18, of Richfield, unconscious.

Schmitz was transported to New London Family Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

Kevin J. Lombard, 23, Richfield, who was staying in the same room, was taken into custody as police investigated the scene of the incident.

Lombard has several convictions for violent crimes.

In April 2007, Lombard was placed on three years of probation with 60 days in jail after being convicted of battery to an officer in Washington County. In March 2009, Lombard’s probation was revoked and he was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in state prison less time served.

Lombard’s prior convictions include battery, car theft and felony escape.

According to New London Police Chief Jeff Schlueter, the case will be referred to the district attorney’s office.
