Beau Ash scored twice and ran for a game-high 111 yards as the Waupaca Comet football team improved to 3-0 in Eastern Valley Conference play Friday, Sept. 16, with a 35-12 win over Little Chute on the Mustangs’ home field.
Ash scored for the Comets on an 8-yard run in the first quarter and quarterback Sam Menzies added a 5-yard run in the second quarter to give Waupaca a 14-0 halftime lead.
Aaron Gooch scored from 6 yards out in the third quarter to make it 21-0, but Little Chute got on the board on the final play of the quarter, as Mitch Ciske threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jon Van Grinsven.
The Comet defense helped seal the win in the fourth quarter, as Seth Deuman returned a Ciske fumble 18 yards for a score and Ash added a 7-yard touchdown run after a Little Chute fumble to make it 35-6.
Jed Albers threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Chet Peerenboom for the game’s final score.
The Comets outgained the Mustangs 217-29 on the ground, but Little Chute had a 176-96 advantage through the air.
First place in the EVC will be on the line Friday, Sept. 23, as Waupaca hosts Appleton Xavier at 7 p.m. at Haberkorn Field. Xavier improved to 3-0 in conference play and 5-0 overall Sept. 16 with a 38-7 win over Winneconne.
