Wolves prevail at Comet Invitational

Wind gusts approaching 50 mph didn’t stop the Winneconne cross country team from claiming the boys’ and girls’ championships Thursday, Sept. 29, at the Comet Invitational at Waupaca High School.

Iola-Scandinavia, Waupaca and Weyauwega-Fremont placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively among the boys, while girls’s teams from W-F, I-S and Waupaca finished second, third and fifth, respectively.

Team scores for the boys were Winneconne, 66; Green Lake, 80; I-S, 98; Waupaca, 101; W-F, 106; Fox Valley Lutheran, 114; Menasha St. Mary Central, 139; and Westfield, 154. Team scores for the girls were Winneconne, 39; W-F, 77; I-S, 82; FVL, 83; Waupaca, 92; Westfield, 146; and St. Mary Central, 171.

The I-S boys had three runners in the top 15. Derek Peterson was 11th in 18:04, Ryan Przybylski was 12th in 18:04 and John Faldet was 15th in 18:11. Also placing for the Thunderbirds were Chase Przybylski, 27th, 18:50; and Westley Petersen, 33rd, 19:37.

Waupaca’s Zach Wheeler tied for the highest finish among area runners, as he took second in 17:18, 45 seconds behind winner Chris Van Scyoc of Green Lake. Also placing for the Comets were James Warren Jr., 13th, 18:06; Ryan Weise, 23rd, 18:40; Eric Bolwerk, 31st, 19:19; and Jeff Servey, 32nd, 19:20.

W-F had a pair of top-five finishes among boys. Corey Zeutzius was fifth in 17:31, while Bryce Behn was ninth in 17:51. Also placing were Nickolas Thomas, 14th, 18:08; Tyler Hart, 37th, 19:41; and Logan Kobiske, 41st, 19:52.

The W-F girls placed three runners in the top 10: Alyse Peters (fourth, 17:18); Ellen Schroeder (fifth, 17:34); and Jane Beyer (eighth, 17:53). Also placing were Amy Hingeveld, 26th, 19:51; and Aysia Schroeder, 34th, 21:03.

Emily Sether finished second for the I-S girls in 16:19. Also placing were Shelby Trzebiatowski, 14th, 18:28; Natalie Gauerke, 17th, 18:37; Leah Pierce, 22nd, 19:15; and Ellen Oligney, 27th, 19:53.

Alisa Blank led the Waupaca girls by placing 13th in 18:23. Also placing for the Comets were Taylor Davidson, 15th, 18:29; Autumn Schultz, 16th, 18:34; Abbey Lazers, 20th, 19:04; and Lizzie Hanke, 28th, 19:53.

W-F placed second out of three teams in the boys’ junior varsity race with 58 points. Dan Crist led the way by placing seventh in 21:19. Also placing were Casey Lenz, 10th, 22:21; Dan Miller, 12th, 22:25; Jared Gruetzmacher, 13th, 22:27; and Jonas Kobiske, 16th, 23:40.

Waupaca did not field a full team. Isaac Barden placed 18th in 22:27, while Nick Henneman was 28th in 24:34.

Waupaca’s Katherine Haen placed first among girls’ JV runners with a time of 18:50 to help the Comets place third with 59 points. Also placing for Waupaca were Sidney DaWalt, 11th, 22:06; Kassy Daniels, 14th, 23:01; Jenna Smith, 16th, 25:54; and Izzati Soekarsono, 17th, 29:02.

I-S placed second with 40 points behind four top-10 finishes. Brooke Phillips was fourth in 19:59, Sarah Brumer was fifth in 20:13, Jessie Taylor was sixth in 20:21, Jane Oligney was 10th in 21:59 and Paige Berg was 15th in 23:43.

Waupaca and I-S placed first and third, respectively, in the boys’ middle school competition, while the Waupaca, I-S and W-F girls placed third, fourth and fifth.

The Comet boys had three runners in the top eight: Ryan Esch (second, 12:59); Hunter Smith (sixth, 13:43); and Tyler Hanke (eighth, 13:54). Also placing were Bruce Sternweis, 11th, 14:32; and Luke Wanty, 16th, 14:55.

Javier Block of I-S won the race in 12:43. Also placing for the T-Birds were Dylan Aanstad, 10th, 14:16; Josh Taylor, 12th, 14:42; Michael Schaefer, 13th, 14:42; and Nick Blum, 19th, 15:10.

Victoria Nowak placed third for the Waupaca girls in 13:57. Also placing for the Comets were Michelle Petkovsek, fifth, 13:57; Ashley Jeske, eighth, 15:27; Mya Snyder, 12th, 15:51; and Tatianna Sotka, 13th, 16:25.

Leighten Fischer won the girls’ race for I-S in 13:16. Also placing for the T-Birds were Natalie Rustad, 15th, 16:33; Erin Thompson, 16th, 16:33; Megan Thulien, 21st, 20:08; and Makenna Stalter, 22nd, 20:09.

Caragan Volz led the W-F girls by placing second in 13:26. Also placing for the Indians were Sydney Bartel, seventh, 15:09; Emily Durrant, 20th, 20:02; Sarah Rohm, 23rd, 20:33; and Kiley Akey, 24th, 21:38.

All three teams will compete today (Thursday, Oct. 6) in the Chase Relays at Weyauwega-Fremont High School. Races are slated to begin at 3:45 p.m.
