Hockey team not short on numbers

Numbers are not a problem this season for the Waupaca Comets hockey team.

“We have a good bunch of freshman coming up,” coach Randy Flesch said while taking a break during a recent practice at the Waupaca Expo Center. “We probably have our strongest numbers since I’ve coached.”

That should help with fresh legs for varsity games. In the past, including last season, several varsity players suited up for junior varsity games and played up to two periods before the varsity contest.

“We won’t have that this year and that’s going to make a big difference,” Flesch said.

The Comets also have a few holes to fillfrom last season’s team that posted a 9-4-1 record in the Great Northern Conference. Waupaca would have won a second straight conference championship, but had to forfeit a win over Medford, which finished last in the GNC standings.

“Unfortunately, we could’ve taken the conference championship,” Flesch said. “We lost the championship, but we went further in the playoffs than Waupaca ever has. That’s our intent this year, to go even further.”

Gone from last year’s team are Brad Navin, now playing hockey at the University of Wisconsin; all-conference second-teamer Tyler Donaldson; and Marcus Johnson.

Key players back this season include senior Bjorn Asher, a first-team all-conference forward; junior Beau Ash, a second-team all-conference defenseman, and Caleb Kiesow; and senior Cooper Flesch, an all-conference honorable mention pick.

The Comets opened tournament play last season by shutting out Shawano and Appleton United before losing 6-0 to eventual state qualifier Green Bay Notre Dame in a sectional semifinal.

Flesch expects Northland Pines, last season’s GNC champion, to be in the mix for the league title.

“We have the talent,” he said. “I can say that we will have a winning season.”

Assistant coaches for the Comets include longtime area youth coach Tim Guyer and former player Andy Yeska.
