Hockey team drops games in Waunakee

After scoring 14 goals in its season opener, the Waupaca Comet hockey team dropped a pair of games over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The Comets fell to Waukesha 5-0 Saturday, Nov. 26, and fell to Waunakee 6-3 Friday, Nov. 25, in Waunakee.

Waupaca opened the season Tuesday, Nov. 22, with a 14-0 Great Northern Conference win over Rhinelander.

Waukesha 5, Waupaca 0

WAUNAKEE – Zed Dietrich scored four goals and Doug Devoe had a pair of assists in the Wings’ win at The Ice Pond at Waunakee.

Waukesha scored twice in the first period, once in the second and twice in the third and outshot Waupaca 28-25. Zach Martin had 23 saves in goal for Waupaca.

Waunakee 6, Waupaca 3

WAUNAKEE – Jason Ford had two goals and three assists as the Warriors knocked off the Comets.

Waunakee took a 1-0 lead into the second period. The Comets came up with two goals in the second and one in the third.

Waupaca 14, Rhinelander 0

WAUPACA – Waupaca built a 5-0 lead in the game’s first 10:12 at the Waupaca Expo Center and never looked back.

The Comets outshot the Hodags 26-2 in the first period, 11-4 in the second and 11-1 in the third.

Bjorn Asher had three goals and two assists for the Comets, while Dante Grorich added two goals and three assists and teammates Caleb Kiesow, Hunter Vezina and Jordan Erickson chipped in with two goals and two assists each.

Beau Ash added a goal and a team-high five assists, while Jared Erickson had a goal and two assists; Cooper Flesch added two assists; Eli Feezel had a goal; and Ben Stone, Frankie Ellingson and Natasha Smith had an assist.

Martin had five saves in goal, while Grant Stearns finished with two.

The Comets hosted Wisconsin Rapids Tuesday, Nov. 29, and will head to Neenah at 7 tonight (Thursday, Dec. 1) to face Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha.

The team’s next conference match is set for Tuesday, Dec. 6, at home against Tomahawk.
