Green Devils stop Wolves

The Manawa Lady wolves opened their 2011-12 season with a non-conference contest against Adams Friendship Thursday night.

The Lady Green Devils picked to finish in the upper half of the South Central conference had little trouble with us as they upped their season mark to 2-0 with a 52-20 victory.

The Lady Green Devils returned a talented guard in Cassi Kogle and forward Hannah Pease added 6′ center Emma Roenneburg who is only a freshman.

Frigid shooting and turnovers proved to be our downfall as we managed only one point during the second period and went over ten minutes without a field goal. A-F, using various defense forced us into 24 turnovers.

Senior Katrina Wilz’s put back basket with 7:31 left in the first frame tied the game at 2. That would be the last time we would have the lead or tied. Roenneburg’s basket regained the lead for the Green Devils as they reeled off 10 unanswered points forcing head coach Jeremy Hanson to call time out. Roenneburg totaled six of her teams ten points Senior Aimee Drath ended the run but the Green Devils held a 10 lead after one quarter of play.

Wilz opened the scoring for us with a free throw that had us to within nine at 16-7.That would be our only point of the second quarter. Roenneburg helped triggered 12-0 run with six more points as A-F held a 28-7 halftime lead.

Kogle opened the second half with two three pointers and the Green Devils held a comfortable 34-11 lead. Senior Krista Braun’s three-point play has us to within 20 with 5:52 left to play in the third. That would be the closest we would get as A-F finished the quarter with a 10-2 run and a 44-16 lead.

With reserves seeing most of the playing time during the final eight minutes the Green Devils maintained 30 point lead throughout the quarter.

Ronneeburg finished with 16 points and Kogle added 14 points. Wilz would lead the Lady Wolves with seven points.

The Lady Wolves hit the road as they open conference play with game at Bonduel on Dec. 13 and take a trip to Stevens Point Pacelli on Dec 16.
