Poppy, Clifford Lee

Clifford Lee Poppy, King, WI, formerly of New London, WI, age 85, died on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI. He was born on May 10, 1926 in New London, WI, the son of Fred and Grace (Boelter) Poppy. He married Joann Cupp in 1953 and they had six children together. They were married for 24 years. On February 14, 1990 he married Fanny Plew in Phoenix, AZ. She preceded him in death in 2009. Clifford is survived by three daughters: Cindy (Gary) Otterson of Waupaca, Debbie Bruette of New London, and Judy (Greg) Struble of New London, three sons: James (Kathy) Poppy of Clintonville, Scott Poppy (Stacy Sommer) of New London, and Tom (Carrie) Poppy of Shiocton, sixteen grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Marian Wienandt of King, Betty (Ted) Dowd of Manawa, Bob (Darla) Poppy of New London, and Wayne (Ronda) Poppy of New London. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fanny; daughter, Sue Schroeder; two grandchildren, Brett and Shannan Schroeder; his parents, a sister, Pearl Mae Poppy, and brothers-in-law, Howard Weinandt and Ken Williams. Clifford had proudly served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. He served in the Navy from June of 1943 until May of 1946. He then enlisted in the Army and served from January of 1947 until April of 1960. He fought with the Special Forces as an Army Ranger. He was a life member of Ranger Infantry Companies (Airborne) of the Korean War. He served with the 8th Airborne Ranger Company. He was also a life member of the VFW. Following his service time he worked as a truck driver for the Hillshire Farm Company in New London for ten years. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at 1:30 PM at the Wisconsin Veterans Home – Main Chapel in King, WI, with Chaplain Rich Engle, officiating. Military Honors and interment were in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King, WI. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca, WI assisted the family with arrangements.
