Three quick goals seal win for Waupaca

A 31-15 shot advantage added up to a win Tuesday, Dec. 20, for the Waupaca Comets hockey team.

The Comets closed out a close 2-1 game with three unanswered goals in the third period in a 5-1 nonconference win over the Fox Valley Stars at the Waupaca Expo Center.

Sam Menzies opened the scoring 1:35 into the game off of an assist from Jordan and Jared Erickson. Bjorn Asher added an unassisted goal with 8:10 remaining in the period.

The Stars, a cooperative program with players from Appleton Xavier, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Kaukauna and Kimberly high schools, cut the lead in half 8:10 into the second period on a power play goal from Levi O’Brien.

Jared Erickson scored twice for the Comets in the third period, as Waupaca scored three times in less than a minute. He found the net 2:41 into the third period, with Asher and Jordan Erickson getting credit for the assist. Hunter Vezina added a goal 21 seconds later off of an assist from Caleb Kiesow and Beau Ash, while Jared Erickson scored 34 seconds later off of an assist from Jordan Erickson and Asher.

Comet goalie Zach Martin finished with 14 saves.

Waupaca will travel to Medford for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday, Jan. 3, against the Raiders. The Comets will also take on Mosinee at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, in the first round of the Sentry Classic at the K.B. Willett Arena in Stevens Point.
