New London girls remain No. 1

New London is still tops among girls’ Division 2 basketball basketball programs.

The unbeaten Bulldogs remained the top-ranked team in Division 2 in the latest state Associated Press poll.

New London had its closest game of the season Tuesday, Jan. 10, a 43-41 win over Denmark in a battle of Bay Conference unbeaten teams and also handed Seymour a 60-30 defeat in another conference matchup Thursday, Jan. 5.

Bridget Pethke’s three-pointer in the final minute lifted the Bulldogs to a two-point win over the Vikings.

The Bulldogs led 15-10 after one quarter and 26-22 at halftime, but the Vikings had a 13-8 advantage in the third quarter to take a

one-point lead into the final period. The Bulldogs then held the host Vikings to six points over the final eight minutes.

Tara Knapstein led the Bulldogs with 14 points, while Pethke added 11 and Brenna Heise also finished in double figures with 10.

New London 60, Seymour 30

New London outscored the Thunder 23-11 in the first quarter and led 39-18 at halftime and 51-23 after three quarters.

Knapstein and Pethke led the Bulldogs with 19 and 18 points, respectively.

The Bulldogs, now 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the Bay, will travel to West De Pere Friday, Jan. 13, to take on the West De Pere Phantoms. The next home game is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 17, against Oconto Falls.
