Eighth grader wins Geo Bee

Shane Olsen, an eighth-grade student at Waupaca Middle School, is the champion of the school district’s 2012 National Geographic Bee.

The district-level competition was held on Jan. 5. A total of 32 students from grades four through eight qualified for

the competition by having the highest scores at their grade level on a written qualifying test.

During the bee, these students then answered 11 questions in the seven-round preliminary competition. A 10 student final round and three student championship round completed the Geography Bee.

Olsen, who is the son of Scott and Sara Olsen of Waupaca, will now complete a written test to qualify for the Wisconsin State Geography Bee.

The Geography Bee finalists in the Waupaca School District included seventh grader Douglas Byers, second place, and eighth grader Nathan Meihak, third place.

The 0ther participants were:

Grade Eight – Lara Broderick, Carley Chivers, Alex Gotto, Frederick Lehman and Mariah Peterson.

Grade Seven – Ryan Johnson, Joseph McCausland, Max Menzies, Alex Panzenhagen and Mason Winter.

Grade Six – Madison Eggers, Mason Gardner, David Johnson, Brandon Krcmar, Rachel Luedtke and Michael Shambeau.

Grade Five – Marcus Finger, Kalyna Harder, Brady Johnson, Noah Loerhke, Bradly Maloney, Alex Thuerman and Hayden Walkush.

Grade Four – Jack Erspamer, Sam Grall, Brooke Hansen, Jake Rayome, Jaclyn Schulke and Sawyer Sopa.
