Free tax assistance offered

CAP Services Inc. and sponsor Community First Credit Union is offering free taxpayer assistance to income-eligible families in Waupaca County.

CAP estimates that eligible families in Waupaca County do not claim up to $600,000 every year in Earned Income Tax Credits and spend thousands of dollars more for someone to prepare their taxes and then often apply for Refund Anticipation Loans unnecessarily.

The Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable federal income tax credit for low-income families. It is credited with raising more children out of poverty than any other program.

“We encourage people to have their refunds directly deposited into a bank account,” CAP Services Project Coordinator Betsy Rozelle said.

Using the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites and direct deposit eliminates preparation and loan fees, so families keep more money in their own pockets.

Waupaca County sites are Fox Valley Technical College-Clintonville and CAP Services’ office on Tower Road in Waupaca.
