Fire destroys barn in Scandinavia

Twenty cattle were lost in a barn fire that occurred Tuesday night.

Jeff Mork’s dairy barn, located in the town of Scandinavia, was a total loss. The majority of his 150 cows were in a nearby free-stall barn.

Mork noticed the fire around 7 p.m. At that time, flames were coming from the milkhouse.

“Within two minutes, the entire barn was engulfed in flames,” he said.

Responding to the scene was the Scandinavia Fire Department. Mutual aid was provided by the Iola & Rural Fire Department, Ogdensburg-St. Lawrence Fire Department, Manawa Rural Fire Department, Waupaca Fire Department, and the Amherst Fire District.

By Wednesday morning, the remaining dairy cattle were being shipped to other facilities. According to Mork, his cows will be cared for by several of his friends.

“I don’t think I will rebuild,” he said.

Mork is a current member of the Scandinavia Fire Department. He served as assistant fire chief for many years.
