Griffin places second, Johnson third at wrestling meet

Garret Griffin and Casey Johnson of Manawa High School each finished in the top three in their respective weight classes at the CWC-8 Conference Wrestling Meet on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Wrestling in the 152-pound weight class, Griffin pinned Jordan Lange of Amherst in two minutes and 48 seconds in the Quarterfinals. In the Semifinals he won by a 5-4 decision over Stanley Robinson of Menominee Indian. In the First Place Match Griffin lost an 8-6 decision to Cody Kreitzer of Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

In the Quarterfinals of the 182-pound weight class, Johnson pinned Brandon Trout of Tri-County/Almond in one minute and 35 seconds. In the Semifinals, Johnson lost by major decision to Freddy Fielding of Shiocton. Johnson won by injury default over Caleb Hudson of Bonduel in the Third Place Match.

Jacob Frenche, wrestling in the 120-pound weight class, and Christian Bertram, wrestling in the 138-pound weight class, each finished fifth at the meet. After getting pinned in his Quarterfinal match, Frenche pinned his opponent in the Consolation Semifinals Match and in the Fifth Place Match.

Bertram lost by a major decision in his Quarterfinal match. He bounced back and pinned his opponent in the Consolation Semifinals Match and in the Fifth Place Match.

Joe Vande Vrede finished sixth in the 170-pound weight class. After losing by decision in the Quarterfinals, Vande Vrede won be decision in the Consolation Semifinals Match, before falling in the Fifth Place Match by a 5-2 decision.

Brad Grimm in the 132-pound weight class and Cody Wildenburg in the 285-pound weight class lost both their matches at the meet.

Prior to the conference meet, the Manawa wrestling team hosted its final math of the season on Thursday, Feb. 2. As a team, they lost 35-21 to Oconto. Bertram, Griffin and Johnson each pinned their opponents, while Vande Vrede won by a 7-5 decision.

Grimm and Wildenburg were pinned in their matches, while Frenche lost by a technical fall.
