County launches online crime tips program

Area citizens can now can send text and web tips to Waupaca County Crime Stoppers.

The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department is working with CrimeReports Tipsoft, a law enforcement software and web application that allows citizens to send anonymous tips by sending a text message from a mobile phone or online.

“The popularity of text messaging has created a significant opportunity for the public to help law enforcement agencies fight crime,” said Sheriff Brad Hardel. “The ability for any citizen who owns a mobile phone to assist in crime solving is of great important to communities and we are excited to play such a pivotal role in the transmission of these crime fighting tips.”

Tipsoft from CrimeReports was built specifically to allow text messaging informants to remain anonymous by encrypting the text messages and routing them through several secure servers, protecting the personal details of the informant.

TipSoft also allows officers to respond by text message to the originating cell phone without ever knowing the identity of the individual who left the tip.

The user’s information is given an alias and a unique ID before being sent. This secure application allows the tipster and the investigator to have two-way dialog while always keeping the user’s identity completely anonymous.

When a text tip is sent to 274637, it is encrypted and routed through secure servers to protect the personal details of the tip provider. It also allows the police to exchange text messages with the tip provider without knowing the person’s identity.

Citizens can also submit anonymous tips on their computer or mobile device at www.tipsubmit.com.

The website allows users to provide details and upload pictures. The site also directs iphone and Android users to the mobil app, Tipsubmit Mobile.

“There is no doubt that this program will dramatically increase our crime fighting capabilities,” Hardel said.

The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department encourages the public to report any non-urgent illegal activity, such as unsolved cases, vandalism, theft, the sale of drugs or information about crimes that are being planned.

Calls can still be made to Waupaca County Crime Stoppers at 888-258-9955.
