St. Rose/St. Mary’s School in Clintonville celebrated Catholic Schools Week Jan. 29-Feb. 5 with events that highlighted hands-on learning, faith and service.
The week kicked-off during Winter Whirl with worship at St. Rose and the Children’s Carnival. The event was attended by students and members of the community.
Highlights included pajama bowling, a full day of art and culture, moving and grooving, and a field trip to hear Ladysmith Black Mambazo at the PAC. The school week finished with students and faculty dressed as storybook characters and the annual Grand Friends Day where grandparents and other friends come in to read and enjoy an ice cream social.
Service projects included a canned food drive for the Clintonville Food Pantry and a Penny War to raise money to help build a well in Eastern Africa. Students learned that many children in this region are unable to attend school because they must carry water every day, and the water they do have is dirty and carries disease. A total of $745.68 was raised for the Water Project. More information is available at www.thewaterproject.org.
Of students enrolled in private schools in the U.S., 42.5 percent are enrolled in Catholic schools.
Jean Peeters, parent of a 4th grader and two alumni, likes St. Rose St. Mary’s because, “We have highly qualified teachers who share their faith in their everyday teaching. Instruction is individualized for each student which builds strong, confident children who excel academically and socially.”
Registration is now open for the 2012-13 school year. SSRM will expand its current PreK-6 program and open a 7th-8th grade classroom which will emphasize cross-curricular project-based learning, communication, leadership and ethical decision making.
Principal Jennfer Wood says, “We are excited to build upon this approach already implemented in our 5th-6th grade classroom and continue to offer something different than other education options in Clintonville.” New this year, the tuition rate is the same for both parishioners and non-parishioners.
