Four Great Northern Conference hockey teams – including the Waupaca Comets – are moving on to the sectional round of the state tournament after winning regional championships Thursday, Feb. 16.
The sixth-seeded Comets outshot No. 3 Green Bay United 5-3 and outshot the Gryphons 45-22 at the Cornerstone Ice Center in Ashwaubenon; No. 5 Mosinee handed No. 4 Stevens Point a 4-2 loss in Stevens Point; seventh-seeded Lakeland knocked off No. 2 D.C. Everest 3-2 in Schofield; and No. 3 Northland Pines beat No. 6 Wausau East 5-2 in Eagle River.
All four teams will play Tuesday, Feb. 21, in a sectional semifinal Waupaca will return to the Cornerstone to face No. 2 Bay Port, a team that beat the Comets 7-6 in overtime earlier this season; Mosinee will top-seeded Wausau West; and Lakeland and Northland Pines will face each other for the third time this season in Eagle River.
