Comet girls win fourth straight

It wasn’t pretty, but the Waupaca girls’ basketball team was able to extend its winning streak to four games.

The Comets hung on Friday, Feb. 17, for a 36-34 Eastern Valley Conference win over Clintonville and also handed Ripon a 47-38 defeat Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Waupaca 36, Clintonville 34

WAUPACA – Waupaca knocked off the Truckers despite missing six of 11 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter and hitting only 11 of 24 in the game.

The Comets led 13-3 after one quarter, 20-16 at halftime and 24-21 after three quarters before being outscored 13-12 in the fourth quarter.

No one in the game finished in double figures. Morgan Smith and Ashlie Hoffman led Waupaca with eight points each, while Hailey Sorenson and Stacy Reinke led the Truckers with eight each.

Waupaca 47, Ripon 38

RIPON – Waupaca outscored the host Tigers 11-6 in the first quarter and led 26-17 at halftime and 34-26 after three quarters.

Mikaila Johnson led Waupaca with 16 points, while Abbey Lazers added 12. Taylor Vander Plas led Ripon with 21.

The Comets will head to Freedom tonight (Thursday, Feb. 23) for a rematch with the Irish before hosting Little Chute at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, and wrapping up the regular season Thursday, March 1, at Winneconne.
