The Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team headed into state tournament play on a positive note.
The Thunderbirds wrapped up the regular season Thursday, March 1, with a 44-40 win over Stevens Point Pacelli.
I-S led 10-9 after one quarter, 25-16 at halftime and 33-23 after three quarters, but the Cardinals came back with a 17-11 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Pacelli eventually cut the deficit to two points late in the game and had a chance to tie the contest in the final seconds before a turnover prevented the comeback.
Brooke Phillips led the T-Birds with 14 points, while Jane Oligney scored nine and Paige Berg added eight. Karina Welch pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Pacelli’s Marisa Rice led all scorers with 18 points.
The T-Birds received a No. 11 seed in Division 4 and opened state tournament play Tuesday, March 6, at No. 6 Menasha St. Mary Central. The winner of that game will play at No. 3 Bonduel at 7 p.m. Friday, March 9, in a regional semifinal.
