Comets win softball opener

It was not a good start to the season for the Waupaca softball team.

The Comets trailed Berlin 6-0 after spotting the Indians three runs in the first and third innings Thursday, March 29, in the season opener. However, Waupaca tied the game in the top of the fourth and went on to post a 16-10 Eastern Valley Conference win.

Waupaca took a 9-6 lead with three runs in the sixth and tacked on seven more in the seventh to take a 16-8 lead. Berlin scored twice in the sixth and added two more runs in the seventh.

Mandy Tomlinson had five hits in five trips to the plate for Waupaca, including a pair of triples. Jessica Borntrager added three hits for the Comets, while Carli Navin also came up with a pair of triples and Natasha Smith had two hits.

Jolee Borntrager picked up the win on the mound.
