Firefighters share the experience

The Weyauwega Fire Department held its third annual Firefighter Experience on Saturday, March 31.

This year’s participants included the teams of Savanah Lederhaus and Racquel Romero; Tre Blohm and John Ruelle; and Seth Harvey and Joel Robbert.

As participants arrived, they received their bunker gear to prepare for the day. They saw some informational videos and were given a quick tour of the trucks in the station.

The program began with presentations on fire, safety and the use of SCBAs.

In the morning, the students did search and rescue in a smoky house trailer and water movement challenges.

After a lunch break at the station, the teams’ afternoon activities included ascending Waupaca’s aerial ladder and getting a great view, use of the various Jaws equipment and using ladders and proper ventilation techniques.

The whole group learned about fire extinguishers and put out fires using the extinguisher.

A quick survey indicated the students enjoyed the day, scoring the activities highly, and included comments such as, “Very well done and makes me wanna be a firefighter,” and “Thanks, fun” and “Job well done.”

The department’s request to students is that they let their friends know and encourage future participants.

The day concluded with participants receiving a Certificate of Participation, a 2012 Weyauwega Firefighter Experience T-shirt and a refund of the $10 deposit.

There will be photographs of the day going up on the Weyauwega Fire Department’s Facebook page, and the department is developing a website.

Assisting the Weyauwega Fire Dept in the Firefighter Experience for the students were the Waupaca Fire Department, Fremont Fire Department and St Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church.
