Police make arrest in Waupaca school-gun case

Police have forwarded charges to the Waupaca County district attorney’s office regarding the girl who brought a gun to Waupaca High School Tuesday, April 17.

The charges referred include felony possession of a firearm in a school zone, misdemeanor possession of a weapon by a person under 18 and misdemeanor carrying of a concealed weapon. The girl is 16 years old and charges have been referred for juvenile intake,

According to Waupaca Police Chief Tim Goke, police were contacted about the incident at approximately 6:18 a.m. Wednesday. They were told that the student had concealed the weapon in a handbag and had shown it to another student.

After obtaining a description of the handgun, police went to the suspect’s home.

“Family members were cooperative with law enforcement and officers recovered a firearm matching the description displayed at the school,” Goke said in a press release Thursday morning.

The girl was taken into custody without incident shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday and detained at the Portage County jail.
