Speaker examines art, democracy

Dr. Caroline Levine, a professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will discuss the role of art in democracy at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 30, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

Levine is the author of Provoking Democracy: Why We Need the Arts. Her work examines how controversial and often unpopular artists – such as Jackson Pollock, Bertolt Brecht, D. H. Lawrence, Dixie Chicks and 2 Live Crew – can become effective catalysts for change and democratic freedom.

Hosted by Winchester Academy, the program is free and open to the public. Levine’s presentation will be preceded by refreshments and conversation at 6 p.m.
