T-Birds come from behind

Iola-Scandinavia overcame a 4-1 deficit and went on to hand Waupaca a 7-5 defeat Friday, April 27, in a nonconference softball matchup.

Waupaca also fell to Berlin and defeated Winneconne in recent Eastern Valley Conference games.

I-S 7, Waupaca 5

WAUPACA – Waupaca built a 4-1 lead through four innings before the Thunderbirds scored five runs in the fifth and added a run in the sixth.

Pitcher Payton Erickson went the distance to earn the victory for I-S. She gave up eight hits and one walk while striking out two batters. The Thunderbirds committed four errors on defense.

Kiara Boutwell had three of the T-Birds’ 10 hits, while Jane Oligney had two. Brooke Phillips drove in two runs, while Whitney Tomczak and Karina Welch drove in a run with a pair of singles.

Waupaca scored five times in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 win over the T-Birds in the junior varsity game.

Brianne Huettner allowed six hits and two walks while striking out 13 batters for the T-Birds. Lindsey Bloom and Jessica Faldet had two hits, including a double. Kjersti Aasen also had a double.

Berlin 16, Waupaca 5

WAUPACA – A six-run third inning helped the Indians knock off the Comets Thursday, April 26.

Waupaca took a 3-1 lead with three runs in the second, but Berlin followed up its big inning with four more runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth.

Waupaca 8, Winneconne 7

WINNECONNE – Waupaca scored four runs in the top of the seventh and held on for the win over the Wolves.

Winneconne took a 7-4 lead with a five-run fifth inning. Mandy Tomlinson’s two-run single tied the game at 7-7 in the seventh and the winning run scored on a grounder to short.

Winneconne had runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but, the runners got thrown out at the plate and third base on a bloop single to end the game.

Jolie Borntrager picked up the win on the mound for Waupaca, while Tomlinson led the Comets at the plate with two hits.

Waupaca returned to EVC play Tuesday, May 1, in Ripon and will host Fox Valley Lutheran for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday, May 4.
