Amherst handed Waupaca a 9-8 defeat Tuesday, May 8, in a nonconference softball matchup in Amherst.
Nine of the game’s 17 runs came in the first two innings as the teams played through steady rain.
Waupaca scored three runs in the top of the first, but Amherst came up with two in the bottom half of the inning and added four more in the second to take a 6-3 lead.
Waupaca came up with a run in the third to cut the lead to 6-4 and regained the lead with a four-run fifth inning.
The Falcons tied the game at 8-8 with two runs in the fifth and won it in the bottom of the seventh on Cassy McCarthy’s single that scored Hannah Grawey.
Natasha Smith had a double for Waupaca as the Comets fell to 7-9.
