Iola’s Mortenson, Tommies at nationals

A former area high school golfer is with his college team in Florida this week competing for a national championship.

Iola-Scandinavia High School graduate Michael Mortenson, a junior at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., is Florida after the Tommies qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships, which began Tuesday, May 15, at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

It is St. Thomas’ first trip to nationals for men’s golf since the event began in 1975.

Mortenson comes from a graduating class of 48, but he’s not heading to Florida to be a tourist.

“We have all worked so hard toward our main goal: qualifying for nationals,” he said after the Tommies won the Minnesota Interscholastic Athletic Association Tournament last fall. “However, all of our goals were not accomplished with this victory. Winning this tournament has made the ultimate goal possible, being the best team in Division III golf and winning the national tournament.”
