Nu Chapter’s Literary Competition winner Madison Mehlberg read her original book Lost in the Run to chapter members during their May meeting at Mathew’s Supper Club in Clintonville.
The 6th grader at Clintonville Middle School was presented with a framed certificate from Sigma State. Her teacher, Lois Graper, parents and sister were Nu Chapter’s dinner guests.
The Mary Jo Nettesheim Literary Competition was established in 1985 by Sigma State, Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society of key women educators.
Local chapters contact schools in their area and provide them with competition rules and the date finished books are due to local chapters. Each local chapter then judges the original fiction books based on story structure, creativity, originality, accomplished spelling, sentence structure and grammar, as well as presentation and illustrations.
The local chapter winners at each grade level are sent to the state level. The books are judged again and the winning books are displayed at the spring Sigma State Convention.
Wisconsin’s Sigma State is the only state in Delta Kapp Gamma to sponsor a literary competition.
The local chapter, Nu Chapter, includes 59 key women educators from Waupaca and Shawano counties.
