T-Bird girls end regular season 13-9

The Iola-Scandinavia softball team won one and lost two games this past week.

The Thunderbirds lost their final two conference games of the season by one run each to Amherst, 5-4, May 14 and Shiocton, 6-5, May 17. The T-Birds did manage an 11-1 nonconference win over Rosholt May 15.

I-S finished fourth in the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference with a 7-7 record. Stevens Point Pacelli won the conference championship with a 13-1 record. The T-Birds also completed their regular season with a 13-9 overall record.

Amherst 5, I-S 4

AMHERST – Iola-Scandinavia could not hold a 4-2 lead as Amherst scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a come-from-behind victory.

Pitcher Payton Erickson went the distance in the tough luck loss. She allowed eight hits and six walks while striking out three batters. The T-Bird defense had three errors.

Iola-Scandinavia took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Brooke Phillips tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a double by Elle Maus.

After Amherst tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the T-Birds scored a run in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Amanda Aanstad singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kylie Johnson. Phillips singled for her second hit of the game to drive in Aanstad.

Amherst tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth, but the T-Birds took a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh. Johnson singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kiara Boutwell. Phillips walked and Maus scored Johnson on a sacrifice fly to center field. Phillips eventually scored on a single to right field by Whitney Tomczak.

Amherst had three hits and took advantage of two errors in the final inning.

I-S 11, Rosholt 1

IOLA – I-S broke the game open with a seven-run third inning. The game was stopped in the sixth inning due to the 10-run rule.

Erickson went the distance to earn the win. She allowed three hits and three walks while striking out two batters. Rosholt’s No. 1 pitcher, Carrisa Wright, was unable to pitch due to an injury.

Aanstad drove in three runs on three hits, including a double; Johnson and Jane Oligney each had two hits including a double; Phillips hit a home run in the third; and Mariah Oppor also had a double.

Shiocton 6, I-S 5

IOLA – Shiocton rallied to score four runs in the sixth. I-S tried to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Tomczak was called out at home as she tried to score on a passed ball to end the game.

Erickson went the distance to take the loss. She allowed nine hits and one walk while striking out six batters. The T-Birds committed three errors on defense.

Johnson and Oligney each had two hits. Oligney singled in the first inning to drive in a run. Phillips had the other hit for the T-Birds, as she doubled in the third to drive in two runs.

The T-Birds will begin regional tournament today (Thursday, May 24) by hosting Menominee Indian at 4:30 p.m. in a Division 3 regional quarterfinal. If the T-Birds win, they will travel to Laona/Wabeno for a semi-final game starting at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 29. The regional championship game will be held Thursday, May 31.
