City begins cross connection control program

The city of Waupaca has contracted with Hydro Designs Inc., of New Berlin, to assist in implementing and managing its new cross connection control program.

The program, mandated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, provides for the inspection of plumbing facilities in all industrial, commercial, governmental and residential water customers in the city.

Cross connections to the city potable water system are potential sources of contamination and need to be identified and corrected.

This program will provide that through onsite inspections.

There is no cost for the inspection, and each inspection takes less than 45 minutes on average for a commercial, governmental and industrial property and 10 minutes for a residential property.

Beginning this month, Hydro Designs will send postal notices and begin to perform the initial inspections of commercial, governmental and industrial buildings throughout the city to detect actual and potential cross connections and make recommendations for the installation of DNR-mandated backflow prevention devices or assemblies, where necessary.

This will help ensure that contaminated or polluted water cannot backflow into clean city drinking water.

City Water Department crews will begin the same inspection process for city residential water users.
