Comets win tourney opener

Waupaca opened state softball tournament play May 24 with a 15-7 win over Berlin in a Division 2 subregional.

The Comets, seeded fourth in their sectional, played at top-seeded Ripon May 29. The winner will take on No. 2 Adams-Friendship or No. 3 Westfield today (May 31) for a regional championship.

Waupaca took a 7-1 lead into the third inning after scoring four times in the first and three times in the second. Berlin cut into the lead with two runs in the third and fourth and one in the fifth to make it 8-5, but Waupaca put the game out of reach with five runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Carli Navin had a pair of triples and scored four runs to lead Waupaca, while Natasha Smith also had two hits. Mattie Koster had four of Berlin’s 16 hits. Emerie Vasquez picked up the win on the mound.
